About Us
First Baptist Church was organized by slaves former Caroline, Spotsylvania Louise and Orange Counties, Virginia. Meetings were held at their homes. Between 1864-1888, the first church building was built at G Street, SW which was later exchanged for lots at Sixth Street, SW. From 1864-1923. the church had seven pastors. The first Deacon Board was formed in 1927.
In 1958, after 94 years of worshipping in Southwest Washington, First Baptist Church moved to Randolph Street, and New Hampshire Ave., NW. In 1960 Deacons and Trustees established a Day Care Center. The Youth Church was also organized. In 1973, First Baptist celebrated the burning of its mortgage.
On February 1976, Rev. Frank D. Tucker assumed the responsibility as shepherd of First Baptist Church. He is the first and only pastor to shepherd First Baptist Church for 35 years. Numerous ministers were ordained by Rev. Dr. Tucker and many went on to pastors.
1987, First Baptist Church launched a renovation and expansion project. That mortgage was burned in 2004. The church will be celebrating its 148th anniversary in November 2011.
Annually, First Baptist holds a church-wide retreat as well as a Youth retreat. The Sunday School hosts the church picnic. Scholarship Funds: R. Lavelle Tucker Scholarship Fund, Patricia Peters-Bagley Scholarship Fund.
Bible study and Prayer meeting are held weekly. The opportunity for more spiritual growth is further extended through the Spring Institute sponsored by the Board of Christian Education.
